Camden School for Girls (CSfG) is a secondary school in North London with a mixed intake at sixth form. The School has, for a long time, enabled pupils to use their understanding of sustainable development to set up projects and activities in the school which contribute to environmental and social objectives. With a growing eagerness amongst staff and students it was decided that the School’s efforts should be recognised by an Eco Schools badge.
A Mr Greeny consultant was brought in to ease, inform and shorten the process and to deliver the Eco Schools Bronze Award. Over the course of our partnership we were closely involved at every step, from assembly of the eco-action team (made up of teachers, students, the facilities manager and a parent governor) to the environmental assessment. Our responsibilities extended to:
- the administrative and time-consuming elements of the work
- facilitating action planning
- chairing the weekly meetings
- providing advice on best practice
At the conclusion of the project, the School has a recycling and composting scheme that is led by staff and pupils, new wildlife habitats, a kitchen garden, new benches and bins, a noticeboard for eco news, and, of course, the Eco Schools award.
With this project, Camden School for Girls has demonstrated its commitment to offering stimulating opportunities to learn and participate; and, in doing so, the momentum is there amongst the School community to achieve Eco Schools Silver status in the near future.
2008-09 update: A group of 6th formers have willingly volunteered to take over the running of the team with ongoing but minor input from Mr Greeny...success!
